Revised Op Payouts (Reduced Loss Penalty)

So I want to let everyone know that the Council voted to reduce the loss penalty for operations and to (very slightly) increase operation payouts at the upper end, and those ops have now been released.

Here's a brief analysis of what The Council saw as the problem with the op payouts, and how we've fixed it.


Analysis Of The Problem
With the release of the new operations, we introduced a previously unused variable known as a "loss penalty." This loss penalty made it so that loser pay was 33% less than winner pay. When we first developed these operations we thought that this 1/3rd pay reduction reduction was tough, but fair.

Over time, and after talking to a range of players, however, we began to discover that this loss penalty was disproportionately affecting low-ELO (LELO) players. By definition, LELO players lose more often than they win. So they were getting many successive payouts with reduced pay. We ran some numbers, and what we noticed is pay for losers was *drastically* less than it used to be. Here are some examples:

The key thing to observe in the 6k+ range--a range where our interview with players showed there to be a particularly large problem--is that when players were losing battles they were getting roughly HALF of what they would have been under the system used last cycle. In lower BV ranges it was bit better, but it was still at least 35% less than than they would have gotten last cycle.

It was the Council's ultimate conclusion that this payout scheme was TOO HARSH. LELO's are already less profitable than MELO's and HELO's by virtue of the fact they suffer more expensive losses. Between higher costs from losing, and lower income, it appeared that for some players this was creating a death spiral.


The Solution
After a lot of work, the Council has now developed a new payout scheme that attempts to find a good middle ground between the payouts last cycle and those introduced this cycle. A key feature of these new ops is we reduced the loss penalty from 33% to just 15%. The new payout scheme is also *slightly* better paying at high BV levels, but still makes it unsustainable to suffer repeated losses of assault mechs.

Overall the system pay for losers should improve significantly. By comparison, the increase in winner pay is very slight and should only be noticeable at the upper end of the BV range.

The new payouts look like this in comparison to the old and current op payouts:

PLEASE NOTE: Due to a problem with the test server, we were not able to test these operations. We've carefully checked out math, and checked and re-checked the settings. But please report to a Council member if any unexpected issues come up.

It appears there was a error with the revised ops that caused land exchange to be lower than normal. The error has been corrected and the revised ops now appear to be working as intended.

Please report any other errors if/when they come up.
