Terrains
There is a total of forty different terrains in the new terrain.xml file. All of them support Advanced Terrains, even if no planet is presently configured with non standard AT settings.
Themes
Each terrain produces a themed map. We use five themes and they affect only the hex pictures used, without actual impact on gameplay. Due to a MM/MW bug, only one theme is allowed per terrain. The themes are:
- Standard: a brown hued hex set, modeled after the historical CBT original map
- Grass: a green hued hex set, ideal for open fields or rolling hills
- Lunar: grey, outworld, barren; what you would find on an alien moon
- Mars: shades of red hex set, for this outlandish theme
- Snow: white hell, with shades of blue; beware of ice!
Groups
Each terrain is part of a group.

The first group consists of 12 rather basic terrains:
- Broken Hills
- Desert Hills
- Desert Plains
- Flat Woods
- Hill Lakes

- Wetland
Secondary terrain group
The next group consists of 13 feature rich terrains:
- Big Volcano
- Desert Oasis
- Drought Rift
- Frozen Wasteland

The last group consists of 15 terrains with varying amounts of buildings:
- Border Town

- Industrial Area

Planets
Each planet has five continents. The first continent covers 50% of the planet, and is taken from the Main group. Then there are two smaller continents (20%) taken from the Secondary group. The remaining 10% of each planet is equally split between two City group continents.
There are no planets with the same five continents, since their combinations are rotated, and the sets are prime among them (12:13:15).
Since there are 168 planets, we have a total of 840 (168 * 5) continents.
The Final Matrix
The final planet/continent/percentage matrix is resumed in the following table:
