Pilots (and Crews) are the warriors within your mechanized monsters of destruction. Like you, they gain Experience and become better at their job the more they do it. Some will even learn special skills during the performance of their job, making them more elite as they grow (if they can survive).

Gunnery/Piloting

A pilot with 4 gunnery and 5 piloting is considered standard in MegaMekNET. Having a nonstandard pilot affects the Battle Value of that mek. Every improvement in gunnery adds 20% to the Battle Value and every improvement in piloting adds 15% to the Battle Value. A gunnery of 5 reduces the Battle Value by 20% and a piloting of 6 reduces it by 15%. Most new units have a 4/5 pilot, but it is possible to get almost any kind of pilot.

Leveling Up

Whenever a pilot takes part in a battle, it receives experience. If the player won that battle, the pilot receives a chance for an upgrade. Depending on the current level of the pilot, one die is rolled to determine if the pilot receives an upgrade. If the roll is less than the pilot's new EXP total, the pilot levels up. A second die is then rolled to determine whether the upgrade is gunnery or piloting. If the second roll is also lower than the pilots EXP, it levels gunnery, else piloting. If the pilot levels up, his EXP is set to zero.

Following chart shows the die size pilots use for the first and the second die roll:

Pilot Special Skills

As mentioned before, Pilots can gain special skills to aid thier battle prowess. They are abilities gained by the player's mek's pilots in the course of their carreers. Most Pilot skills come from Maxtech, some are from Mechwarrior RPG. When ever you win an operation your pilots have a chance of leveling or gaining a new pilot skill.

Possible Pilot Skills:

  • AsTech(AT): This skill allows your Pilot to become an assistant tech. When using Advance Repairs your pilot can repair you mek at only the cost of the replacement parts/Armor if not using Advance Repairs your Pilot acts as if it is another Tech for that mek. their by using less techs to maintain his current unit.
  • Dodge Maneuver (DM): Enables the unit to make a dodge maneuver instead of a physical attack. This maneuver adds +2 to the BTH to physical attacks against the unit. Increases BV by 1%
  • Maneuvering Ace (MA): Enables the unit to move laterally like a Quad. Units also receive a -1 BTH to rolls against skidding. Increases BV by 1%
  • Melee Specialist (MS): Enables the unit to do 1 additional point of damage with physical attacks and subtracts one from the attacker movement modifier (to a minimum of zero). Increases BV by 3%
  • Pain Resistance (PR): When making consciousness rolls, 1 is added to all rolls. Also, damage received from ammo explosions is reduced by one point. Increases BV by 1%
  • Natural Aptitude Gunnery (NAG): Level Gunnery at one level easier. (i.e. a 3/5 Pilot with Natural Attitude Gunnery levels like a 4/5 one).
  • Natural Aptitude Piloting (NAP): Level Piloting at one level easier. (i.e. a 4/4 Pilot with Natural Attitude Piloting levels like a 4/5 one).

Pilot Pool

(Note: this paragraph is no longer true for the current version of MegaMekNET. A pilot is matched to his unit, and may not be transfered.) Another important option is that you can transfer pilots between meks of the same weight class. You may also purchase recruit pilots from your faction (should a few die or get captured in battle).

Faction Pilots Pool

Each Faction has a Pilot Pool, when a new mek is built, a random pilot from the pool is assigned to the new unit. Experienced pilots may lose Pilot Skill Levels (gunnery/piloting) when they re-enter the Faction pilot pool but they keep all of their Pilot Skills (i.e. Maneuvering ace, etc)

Player Pilots Pool

(Note: this paragraph is no longer true for the current version of MegaMekNET. Players no longer have a personal pilot pool.) You have a personal Pilot Pool in which you can store your pilots. Moving pilots from meks to the pool does not affect the pilot's skills at all. When a game ends and there are pilots on the battlefield, recovered pilots return to the victor's pilot pool. Pilots on the defeated team can be recovered by their side or capetured. Captured pilots used to go to the Faction Pilot Pool, but now there is a small chance of captured pilots defecting and entering the victor's pilot pool.

Players are only allowed to have three (3) unassigned pilots for each mek weight class. It is possible under certain times to have more than three unassigned pilots in a weight-class, for example after a large battle where the pilot survived but his mek does not. However, if a player exits the client while having excess unassigned pilots, then the server automatically eliminates all but three pilots from that pool.

Players can not purchase a new pilot if an unassigned pilot is in that weight class pool.
