Campaign setting

MegaMekNET uses MekWars server to carry out a full scale campaign involving 9 factions, 160+ planets, 40 terrains, hundreds of players and thousands of units. The game universe is set during Classic BattleTech's inner sphere succession wars of 3025, a futuristic galaxy wide conflict involving high-tech humanoid armored warmachines. Several factions are represented such as the Federated Suns, Draconis Combine, Lyran Commonwealth and much more...

MegaMekNET involves the most basic setting with a very classical flavor and a narrow range of weapons and options, collectively called "Level 1 tech" or "L1". MegaMekNET is perhaps the best place to start playing online Classic BattleTech because of its relative simplicity and larger player base.

If you are looking for different settings such as Clan technology ("Level 2-3 tech") you may have a look at other MekWars servers using the MekWars server tracker.

Personal assets

Each player starts with a personnal hangar filled with meks. Further down the commander career, there are other units such as vehicles (both land and airborne) and infantry. Your first goal is to wisely manage your assets in order to field a competitive army. Your meks can be damaged or destroyed in combat, and soon you will have to repair them, scrap them or replace them with fresh units, bought from your faction factories, or obtained with other means. As unit commander you'll also have to manage your pilot pool, assigning MechWarriors to your meks as you see fit.

In order to insure campaign balance and proper representation of each unit rarity, you are not able to choose which mech you want to buy. You'll have to compose with your faction production.

Team play

Players are gathered in a community of fate, the faction. Each faction has dozens of players with a common goal: win the war. As a team, players are encouraged to show great cohesion to succeed. Teammates are allowed to share units, pilots or money with each other.

Some factions, namely the Five Successor Houses, engage in land invasion strategical warfare, conquering planets out of their enemies. There are also four other factions, whose planets cannot be conquered, and whose players cannot engage in conquers.

Economy and game balance

An economic system allows full scale strategic attrition on opponents or their industries to expand the player faction resources. The more players are active, the quicker a faction industrial capacity will produce new units. Moreover some operation types allow you to capture enemy units and raw materials, or delay the enemy factories output.

Another game experience

One important thing to remember: MegaMekNET and other MekWars servers game experience is different from most online games. The pace of play is different, player attitudes are different. It is not real time gaming, with furious action, and blasting video and sound effects. An usual game session is not a 15 minutes onslaught, as most of the games are at least 1 hour long with likely periods of actively looking for a game, depending on the server's current player pool. Hence, MegaMekNET is not recommended to impatient, restless gamers. The campaign setting also involves drought and difficult times. Grabbing an assault mek is not a common opportunity, and really rare unit design are difficult to see around.
